The Norway-Vulcan Senior Center
A warm table and good company, right in the heart of Downtown Norway.
The Norway-Vulcan Senior Center has been a cornerstone of community life in Norway and Vulcan since 1967 — a place where residents 60 and over can share a meal, catch up with neighbors, and stay engaged with the community they've helped build.
Located at 608 Main Street, the center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 12 pm, with a salad bar at 11 am followed by lunch at 11:30 am. Meal pickup options are also available for Norway and Vulcan residents who can't make it in person. A $5 membership fee opens the door to discounted meal pricing and a vote on the Senior Center board, which meets on the third Thursday of every month. Residents of all ages are welcome during operating hours for a separate fee.
A registered 501(c)3 nonprofit since 1974, the center operates independently and is supported in part by a community millage renewal, most recently approved in 2022.
Beyond the lunch table, the Senior Center keeps its members active and connected throughout the month. Morning coffee clutches, exercise classes, evening card games, bingo, and knitting and crochet groups give regulars plenty to do. Handmade crafts — towels, blankets, hot pads, beadwork, and more — made by Senior Center members are available for purchase in the dining area during operating hours.
The center is also a familiar presence at Downtown Norway's biggest events. From pouring hot chocolate along the Christmas in Norway parade route to serving Sloppy Joes at Leif Erikson Day and selling baked goods at the Citywide Rummage Sale, the Senior Center shows up for the community year-round. Director Alicia Rochon puts it this way: "We enjoy being a part of the community, and we like to stay busy."
Volunteers of all ages are welcome to join the team. Whether helping in the kitchen, assisting with meal cleanup, or pouring coffee, it's a rewarding way to spend a morning — and you'll leave with new friends and no shortage of good stories.
